Why WLRO Is Called an Organization of Readers
1. The Depth Within Simplicity
Not to impress or astonish others with difficult words, but rather, to have the ability to perceive the depth within simplicity is one of the qualities of a true reader. We want to encourage and value this depth of understanding.
2. The Special Relationship Between Writers and Readers
Generally, relationships among writers and poets develop through writing, but the relationship between writers and readers holds a special place of respect for us. Because the reader is the one who receives, understands, and gives meaning to a writer’s creation through their own thoughtful engagement.
3. Reading as Creative Wisdom
Just as creating a piece of writing is an expression of creativity, deeply understanding, appreciating, and discovering the essence of a piece of writing is also a form of creative wisdom—and that wisdom belongs to the reader.
4. Readers as Participants in Literature
A good reader does not merely read a piece of writing; they quietly connect with the writer’s thoughts, feelings, and dreams. Therefore, a reader is not merely an observer of the literary world but an important participant in it.
5. Thought, Understanding, and Mutual Respect
We want to build a culture where the value of thought is greater than identity, the depth of understanding is greater than expression, and mutual respect is greater than differences of opinion.
6. Equality Among Readers
There is no hierarchy in being a reader. A writer, poet, literary figure, teacher, student, professional, or anyone from any section of society can come together as a reader and be equally respected.
7. Keeping Literature Alive Across Generations
A writer presents a thought to the world through writing, while a reader carries that thought within their own understanding and helps it reach many others. In this way, literature remains alive from one generation to another.
8. Beyond a Culture of Praise
We do not want a culture based only on praise. Rather, we want to build a thoughtful community of readers who can ask meaningful questions, express their opinions respectfully and logically, and accept differences of opinion with dignity.
9. Reading as Self-Development
A true reader does not merely read books; they learn to read people, society, time, and even themselves. Therefore, the practice of reading is also a practice of self-development and social development.
10. Readers as Companions in Thought
To us, a reader is not merely someone who reads; a reader is a companion in thought, a partner in creation, and a silent contributor to building a better society.
11. Reading and an Enlightened Society
We believe that the more a society learns to read, understand, and think deeply, the more tolerant, humane, thoughtful, and enlightened it becomes.
12. The Dignity and Pride of Being a Reader
Therefore, “Reader” is not a lesser identity within WLRO; rather, it is an identity of dignity and pride—one that brings writers, poets, literary figures, literature lovers, commentators, committee members, and people from every section of society together through a shared commitment to higher thought, mutual respect, and personal and collective development.
